November 20, 2009The myth that drinking lots of water may give you a glowing complexion has been busted by the British Nutrition Foundation. Lots of sunscreen and a balanced diet are more helpful in keeping skin healthy, according to the experts. In this case, what kind of diet is that and do celebrities follow it too?
“Just drinking water for the sake of drinking water really has no effect on improving the appearance of skin. It is just a common misconception,” said Heather Yuregir, the report author. Actually, the skin cells are healthy thanks to vitamins E, C, B, and A, which can be found in fruits and vegetables. “And sun cream is really recommended to prevent the signs of ageing because the majority of the signs of ageing that appear on the skin are caused by sun damage,” added Yuregir.
The report doesn’t say water is not important. Skin is made up of several layers, and one of them, stratum corneum, needs 20-30% water in its composition, otherwise skin elasticity will be reduced and surface will get rough. The researchers didn’t find any links between drinking lots of water and having a beautiful skin.
Here are a few examples of sources for vitamins E, C, B, and A:
| Vitamin E | Vitamin A | Vitamin C | Vitamin B |
| almonds | broccoli | broccoli | bananas |
| pumpkin seeds | carrots | parsley | whole-grain cereals |
| kiwi | kiwi | basil | bread |
| wheat germ | grain products | tarragon | red meat |
| corn | apricots | coriander | egg yolks |
| olives | cantaloupe | mint | green leafy vegetables |
| spinach | mandarin | dill | legumes |
| asparagus | mango | apples | sweet corn |
| | nectarine | pineapples | brown rice |
| | plums | bananas | berries |
| | watermelon | grapefruits | yeast |
| | milk | kiwi | pears |
| | meat | pears | |
| | fish | oranges | |
Well, you’ve seen what researchers say, but do celebrities agree?
Rutina Wesley says: “Wash your face, wash your face, wash your face! No matter how tired you are at the end of the day, wash your face! And moisturize and use sunscreen!”
Susan Lucci has a smoother skin due to the large amounts of omega-3 fatty acids in sardines (she has a Portuguese diet).
Alicia Silverstone thinks giving up dairy and meat you can bring amazing changes in your energy level, skin, waistline, and nails.
Woody Harrelson is a handsome actor, but he had to do some sacrifices to achieve that. He had an acne problem which he solved with a vegan acne cure. He avoids meat and dairy products and eats only raw food.
Marisa Miller’s advice is to avoid processed foods because they are unhealthy and bad for the skin, nails, and hair.
Stefanie Powers has pretty good tastes; she likes caviar, which is good because it contains omega-3 acids and it may also be good for the skin.
With “little bit of this, little bit of that” you can get a beautiful skin because beauty tips are all over the place, you will just have to see which are good and which are bad.
