The Mind Power - Boosting Diet
By Oana Pop, Project Weight Loss Editor
July 28, 2008

Losing the power of your mind as one grows older is a natural process and because it can`t be stopped completely, we can definitely slow it down through a combination of exercise, taking care of our health, physical and emotional, and a good diet.

There is a possibility for us to protect the cells of our brain from pre – mature damage. In fact, not protect but enhance it with the help of a few changes in our daily routine. The result is overwhelming for all of us: increased cognitive abilities, better memory and improved mental performance.

Oxidation is a process which causes stress on our brain and lowers our cognitive abilities. We can eat dark colored foods which help with the protection of our brain from oxidative damage. You can eat fruits like: mango, apricot, watermelon, broccoli, spinach, and kale. Some other excellent brain foods are: oat, whole wheat flour and grain, which provide energy.

Boosting the functioning of the brain implies eating a lot of fish, about 3 -5 meals of fish per week, but we must take in consideration that not all fish posses boosting power for our brain. A great meal for our brain should contain: tuna, herring, salmon, mackerel and sardines. Each and every one of these species is high in omega – 3 fatty acids, which is the necessary fat for neural functions.

We must always take in consideration nutrients and vitamins. A good diet should always have a base of vitamins, but since not all of us eat a healthy meal every day, it is good for us to take vitamin supplements daily. The vitamins which help us boost out brain power are: vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin B6 and B12.

Through the power of meditation we can lower the cortisol level in our brain. Cortisol is a stress hormone that causes lower cognitive abilities and memory gaps. Meditation also prevents the shrinking of our cortex, which is the important engine for all our physical functions.

These are just some of the various ways in which we can boost our brainpower. You should also know that staying in the rain with your eyes closed helps work your brain and in the same time, boost its power.
