August 21, 2009The DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet is well known for its benefits. It is recommended for lowering blood pressure, weight loss, and now the researchers have proven that it may curb the risk of developing kidney stones too.
According to Reuters Health, the new study shows adults who followed DASH-like diets had 40-45% lower risk of developing kidney stones than those who didn’t follow diets based on the DASH principles, which are: reducing the amount of fat by choosing healthy foods, low in cholesterol, introducing more fruits and vegetables in the diet, along with whole grain products, and cutting down sweets and sugar-containing beverages from the meals.
Most people suffer from kidney stones because of calcium combined with a compound called oxalate. However, according to Dr. Eric Taylor, Harvard Medical School in Boston, people with the most DASH-like diets lowered the risk of having kidney stone even though they consumed more oxalates on average.
The doctor and his colleagues consider people with a history of very high oxalate levels in their urine and kidney stones might be right to avoid high oxalate foods. At the end of this article you’ll find a list with foods that may be high oxalate.
“We think a DASH-style diet holds great promise as a way to reduce the risk of recurrence in individuals with a history of kidney stones,” said Tylor. The trick it to eat as less salty as possible, reduce sweets from your diet and reduce if not avoid alcohol.
