Can Your Dancing Moves Attract the Opposite Sex?

By Yana Katsevich, Project Weight Loss Editor-in-Chief

We always try to dance in a “sexy” way in order to attract the opposite sex, if you are at a party, at the bar, or somewhere else on a dance floor.  Dancing is not only sexy but it is a good exercise too!

Well, there might be actually some science to this.  The way you move your head, neck, and trunk may impact the way others look at you and perceive you.  Dr. Nick Neave of Northumbria University in Britain conducted a study of dancing moves and how others perceive them.  The women rated big movements in both the head and the trunk as the most attractive.  However, head-banging was not attractive even though it involves lots of movement but no variability.  The variability of movement attracts women.

“Choreographers have told Dr. Neave that movements in these three planes come from strength and suppleness, so they would help to indicate a genetically fit male.”

This study can be the first step to understanding the biology and culture of dance.

Dr. Neave is also trying to study women dancers.  For example, does wearing high heels while dancing make you more attractive.  Our initial reaction is “yes” but he wants to find scientific proof.  Some say high heels make you look younger, others say high heels make your bum shake more, whatever it is, it works.  Maybe that’s why women buy shoes that they can barely walk in!

It’s also good to remember that dancing is a great form of exercise.  While dancing you work out your entire body.  Most stars who have been on the show, “Dancing with the Stars,” lost a significant amount of weight.  Jenny Garth lost five pounds in three weeks on the show.  Wayne Newton lost three pant sizes in ten days.  Mark Cuban lost 20 pounds and the list goes on and on.
