Red Wine: Myth or Elixir?
By Neil Stadford, Project Weight Loss staff writer
October 13, 2007

Small amounts of red wine, such as one glass per day, may decrease by thirty percent the risk to suffer from cardiac disease for adults, increase the levels of good cholesterol, the HDL cholesterol, and prevent the increase of the bad cholesterol, the LDL cholesterol, according to studies.

Moderate amounts of wine may also prevent the inadequate blood coagulation and reduce the process of degradation of blood vessels due to fat deposits.
It was showed that in the Mediterranean region, where large amounts of wine are produced and consumed, the number of people who suffer from cardiovascular disease is much smaller compared to other regions.

A study conducted in Spain during a year involved 4,000 volunteers and analyzed the effect of beer, red wine, and other alcoholic beverages on someone`s immune system. The results showed that people who consumed a glass of red wine per day had a forty-five percent smaller risk to get sick. Red wine may also prevent simplex herpes A.

People who usually don`t drink alcohol have different antioxidant sources. Studies showed that the levels of triglycerides increases due to alcohol excess and alcohol may lead to significant weight gain. If a glass of wine per day may protect the heart, the excess may increase the risk to develop liver or cardiovascular diseases.

Researchers conclude that the constant consumption of moderate amounts of red wine may protect against coronary diseases in case of men over forty years old and women over fifty-five.
