Watch Out for Your Kids - Tyson's Tragedy
By Alex Baran, Project Weight Loss Staff Writer

Mike Tyson, former heavyweight boxing champion, has the daughter in critical condition, on life support. Exodus, 4-year-old, was playing near Mike’s exercise equipment where she caught her neck in a cable attached to a treadmill. Her brother alerted the mother which called 911.

When you have children is very important to provide them a safe environment. Here are some tips regarding your kid’s safety:

Children are fascinated by tools and machineries. These should be kept in areas strictly off limits. If we talk about a garage with an automatic door, place the operating switch out of your child's reach. A pressure-sensitive device is the best choice. If you use power tools, make sure to unplug them after use.

The kitchen is also a tricky place. Put away all kitchen utensils after use. Don't let any electrical cords dangle over tabletop edges. Garbage should be in a container that has a hard-to-open lid. Another solution can be storing it under the sink, but in this case you should install a child-resistant latch. Children should be taught at early age what “hot” means.

Most accidents happen in the bathroom. All electrical appliances should be placed out of the bathroom. Make sure the kids can’t get trapped in the laundry chute. Never leave your child alone when he’s taking a bath. Don’t forget to adjust the thermostat on your water heater at maximum 120o F to avoid burns.

Do you work at home? Pens, pencils, erasers and all this kind of stuff should be kept well away from places where kids can reach. Tape down extension cords and cap or cover electrical outlets.

Laundry room may be a dangerous place too. Colorful detergent boxes and noisy appliances attract children, so don’t let any supply sitting out on the dryer or washer. Dispose empty containers in the outdoor trash and wipe up any residue after use. Talking about clothes, best time to iron is when children sleep. Also avoid leaving the iron plugged in or on top of the ironing board.
