Going to 100, Jack LaLanne Gives Tips for Life's Longevity

By Alex Baran, Project Weight Loss Staff Writer
September 24, 2009

Jack LaLanne is a TV Fitness pioneer and despite his age, 95 soon, he’s a living proof of healthy human. He never stopped teaching people about fitness and nutrition, not even now, going to 100. On his birthday he releases his book "12 Steps to a Healthy Long Life."

In an interview he gave to Share Guide, Jack LaLanne said “Everything you do in life, I don't care, good or bad--don't blame God, don't blame the devil, don't blame me, blame you. You control everything! The thoughts you think, the words you utter, the foods you eat, the exercise you do. Everything is controlled by you.”

There are many people who eat healthy all their life, but without exercise, they don’t look so good. On the other hand, people who exercise but eat junk food look better, because, as LaLanne says, exercise is the key.

There shouldn’t be excuses for not working out. “Well gee, you have 640 muscles in your body. There may be a few exercises you can't do, but there are hundreds you can do! Too many people make excuses like I am too old, or I don't have the time, or it costs money,” said the fitness pioneer.

LaLanne finds solutions even for people with disabilities and injuries – “Work around it. If you can't use your legs, you can sit in a chair and you can do curls, you can do presses, you can do stretches. There are all kinds of things you can do. Or maybe you can't use your upper body but you can work your legs.”

He doesn’t think about his age, about tomorrow, or about changing something in his healthy regime. No – he thinks about today and does it as a therapy, as something that keeps him alive.

Jack LaLanne takes his proteins from fish and egg whites. He doesn’t eat turkey or chicken; neither milk nor anything that comes from a cow. “I'd rather see you drink a glass of wine than a glass of milk,” along with 6 or 7 glasses of water a day, he advises.

You should think about today, about living, not about your age. Your need to look good and healthy living should be strong enough to force you to exercise and have the right nutrition. Never lose your sense of humor and listen to Jack LaLanne because he knows what he’s doing: “I want to get my message out to the people. I might live forever or it may seem like that. I tell people I can't afford to die; it will wreck my image!”
