January 22, 2008When the weather is getting colder, the viruses and bacteria let us know they`re here. Studies showed that usually a person catches a cold three times per year. The reason why some people get sick more often while others don`t is the fact that some of us have weaker immune systems.
A cold may last up to three days, but the body is totally recovered in ten days. Every day we make choices that affect our immune system: the food we eat, the physical activity in our life, or the nutritional supplements. Prevention is the key-word for this period.
What can anyone do in order to prevent a cold? Washing the hands with soap is the most simple and efficient way to get rid of viruses and bacteria. The diet should be rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Unsaturated fats and fried products should be avoided or consumed in smaller amounts.
Vitamin and mineral supplements are recommended in the cold season. Vitamin B helps us fight stress, while vitamin A, vitamin C, selenium, and zinc are essential for the normal functioning of the immune system. A few plants such as Ginger, Ginseng, and Echinacea may enhance the immune system.
The well-functioning of the cardiovascular system may be maintained through moderate physical activity. Physical exercises and even walking are essential for the body weight control and decrease the risk to suffer from cardiovascular diseases.
Generally, eight hours of sleep per night are enough for a person with intense physical and mental activity. The lack of sleep may decrease the resistance of the immune system.
