Overweight People More LIkely to Have Bad Breath, Says New Study
By Sarah Dallins, Project Weight Loss Editor - Fitness
January 21, 2008

If you were thinking about starting a weight loss program after the holidays, then you should know there is another good reason to do so. There is a strong link between being overweight and having a bad breath, according to researchers at the Tel Aviv University in Israel.

The study conducted by breath expert Mel Rosenberg at the Department of Human Microbiology and The Maurice and Gabriela Goldschleger School of Dental Medicine, Sackler Faculty of Medicine at Tel Aviv University showed the connection between alcohol consumption and unpleasant breath, as well the fact that people are more likely to have bad breath as they have more extra-pounds.

The study involved eighty-eight adults with different heights and weights. The subjects were questioned about their daily habits and had a test of their breath odor. The specialists concluded that overweight participants were more likely to have bad-breath. This may happen because the obese patients may be more careless with their bodies and neglect their dental hygiene.

The bad breath may appear due to several causes. For instance, obese or overweight people may have a diet that causes dry mouth. Other factor that may lead to this condition includes poor dental hygiene and even the morning cup of coffee.

The researchers` goal is to create a complete list of potential factors that may cause bad breath, so people can treat themselves. In most cases, bad breath is curable but should not be ignored since it may be a sign of disease.
