Do You Eat When You Are Angry?
By Sarah Dallins, Project Weight Loss Editor - Fitness
February 13, 2008

Many people usually think of food as a refuge when they are very sad, depressed, angry, or bored. Generally, people who eat more when they`re having a tough period also feel guilty when they think about the extra-weight that they may gain and lose their self-confidence.

If you feel that emotions have taken control over your diet, the following tips can help you correct the unhealthy habits:

Tip#1: Pay attention to what makes you overeat.

It`s important to discover the main causes of your overeating in order to find solutions. Keep a diary where you will note when you`re sad, stressed, bored, or how often you have these feelings. This way you will find out the reason why you eat too much: hunger, sadness, or boredom.

Tip #2: Find other ways to control your emotions.

When you feel overwhelmed try to write, draw, or do other interesting activities instead of heading to the fridge. Even a brisk walk can make you feel better. Physical activity helps you get rid of the sadness because physical activity enhances the production of serotonin.

Tip #3: Do something interesting.

Many people pay more attention to food when it`s nothing else to do. If you think this is your case as well, try to add more activity to your life. For instance, call a friend, read a book, or go to the movie.

Tip #4: Make healthy choices.

If you cannot control yourself, at least choose healthy food products such as vegetables, fruits, or whole grain products.

Tip #5: Ask for medical advice.

A specialist can help you find out the hidden causes of this behavior and the ways to correct it. You may ask for advice from a dietitian or a psychologist, according to your needs.
