Jayson Williams' Lifestyle May be Dangerous for Him
By Alex Baran, Project Weight Loss Staff Writer
April 28, 2009

Jayson Williams is a former NBA professional basketball player who was found intoxicated and agitated in his Manhattan hotel room. He was taken to a hospital by the police after reports that he was suicidal and violent. The police also found empty bottles of prescription pills.

The symptoms associated with suicide are hopelessness, anhedonia, insomnia, severe anxiety, impaired concentration, psychomotor agitation, and panic attacks. In particular, hopelessness is a major depression symptom that seems to be associated with the evolution of suicidal intent.

What treatment can we provide if someone we care about has these symptoms?

The key factors in treatment include the one's suicide plan, social support and judgment, and access to lethal means. If he or she is hospitalized the family shouldn’t leave him alone while he or she is transferred to a more safety environment.

It has been noted that antidepressants are much more effective than placebo in diminishing suicidal ideation. Because anxiety and insomnia have been demonstrated to be linked with completed suicide, these symptoms must be treated quickly.

The best natural antidepressants are those that were proven to relieve depression in clinical studies. Only a handful of the dozens of amino acids, herbs, and nutrients claimed to cure depression.

Anxiety can be treated using relaxation techniques and exercise. Also it helps talking to other people in support groups. Various types of relaxation therapy are available: Thai Chi, yoga, or other helpful exercises. This should be discussed with a doctor first.

Treatment options for insomnia include lifestyle and behavior changes, medicines, and complementary medicines. Relaxation exercises, like progressive muscle relaxation, may prevent lying in bed with the mind racing. Healthy thinking, or positive thinking, is a way to help staying cope with a health problem.
