A Road Trip Recipe - Pinwheel Italian Calzones
By Alex Baran, Project Weight Loss Staff Writer
May 08, 2009

When they are caught out on the road, most people look for the nearest fast-food restaurant when the kids get hungry. Planning ahead might be a good solution for your health - you can pack healthy snacks for the road, like Pinwheel Italian Calzones.

Since usually kids don’t like veggies, these calzones are a great way to sneak them into their diet. Another good thing is the calzone snacks come in small sizes, making it easy to pick up and eat them. Pinwheel Italian Calzones tastes like pizza – that should make kids crazy for it.

Ready in – 30 min.

Preparing time – 20 min.

Cooking time – 10 min.

Pinwheels – 16

Ingredients

· 2 cups ricotta cheese
· 1 teaspoon salt
· 1 tablespoon and 1 teaspoon    Italian seasoning
· 1 cup grated parmesan cheese
· 2 cups chopped pepperoni
· 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
· 1 cup finely chopped fresh mushrooms
· 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
· 1 cup finely chopped green bell pepper
· 8 ounce refrigerated crescent roll dough
· 14 ounce jars pizza sauce

Instructions

First preheat the oven to 350o F.

Stir together the ricotta cheese, salt, Italian seasoning, parmesan cheese, pepperoni, mozzarella cheese, mushrooms, onion, and green pepper in a medium bowl. Then put it aside.

Unroll the crescent roll dough to separate into 16 rectangles. The remaining perforations must be pressed together to seal. Spread the filling in equal amounts onto the rectangles and roll up the filling inside the dough. For this start at the short side. Each finished roll should be sliced into 16 slices. Place cut side down onto a baking sheet.

Bake them for 10 - 12 minutes in the oven (that will be preheated), until lightly browned. Warm the pizza sauce while the pinwheels are baking.

The pinwheels can be served with pizza sauce in cups for dipping. Havefun in the trip!
