Smoking and Weight Loss: Connected?

By Neil Stadford, Project Weight Loss staff writer
October 21, 2007

Usually, people who used to smoke and quit this habit after a long period tend to gain weight, but that isn`t a rule.

Smoking increases metabolism and the speed of fat burning so when people quit smoking their metabolism rate will easily decrease until it reaches a normal level. Those who give up smoking start to snack more in order to replace the cigarettes. Once people quit smoking, they may also notice that food tastes better and they will feel the urge to eat more.

However, the main reason for weight gain is the increased food intake and it may be avoided by eating less and doing more exercise. If people resist the temptation to eat instead of smoking and also bring improvements to their lifestyle, weight gain after quitting smoke is not a problem.

It is necessary to know all the benefits that may appear once people stop smoking. For instance, after twenty minutes, the blood pressure will decrease, pulse will also decrease, and hands and feet temperature will increase. After eight hours the levels of monoxide of carbon will decrease to normal quotes, and the oxygen level will reach normal quotes as well.

After twenty-four hours the risk to suffer from heart attack is smaller, at forty-eight hours after smoking the last cigarette the capacity to smell and taste will improve. After two weeks, the blood circulation and lungs functions also improve.

Inconvenient such as fatigue, cough, or sinus congestion may slowly disappear. One year later, the risk to develop coronary conditions will decrease by half compared to the risk of a smoker. In ten years, the risk to suffer from lung cancer, throat cancer, kidney, or esophagus cancer significantly decreases. In fifteen years, the risk to develop coronary diseases reaches the same quotes as for people who never smoked.
