Anti-Inflammatory Drugs May Do Miracles for Obese People

By Sarah Dallins, Project Weight Loss Editor - Fitness

Anti-inflammatory drugs are an inexpensive way to reduce the risk of suffering from diabetes, to reduce glycemia, and lower inflammations for obese young adults, according to a new study.

Salsalate, an anti-inflammatory drug has been used for many years to treat the pains caused by rheumatoid arthritis. The study`s results showed that salsalate can significantly reduce of suffering from heart disease, type 2 diabetes, inflammations, and glycemia in case of overweight or obese young adults.

Specifically, in case of people who had almost four grams of salsalate per day the researchers registered a decrease of the glucose levels by thirteen percent and a thirty-four percent decrease of the markers of inflammation.

It is well known that people can reduce the risk of suffering from certain conditions by losing weight and having more physical activity. However, since many people can not maintain these lifestyle changes on the long-term, they can be helped through medications, according to lead author Dr. Allison Goldfire.

Large amounts of aspirin may lead to stomach bleeding. Although salsalate is quite similar to aspirin, it is also a nonsteroidal, anti-inflammatory drug that does not cause bleeding.

This was the first study that focused on the metabolic changes of obese people who take salsalate and have not developed diabetes yet. The findings from this small population study are encouraging and the National Institutes of Health decided to support a larger study that will look at efficiency and safety of the salsalate intake in the treatment of type 2 diabetes.
