True Blood and Yoga: a Fitness Solution
By Alex Baran, Project Weight Loss Staff Writer
June 22, 2009

“True Blood” gets better and better.  The second episode from the new season is better than the premiere.  It has suspense, humor, and good looking actors.  Speaking of actors, I’ll present you Ryan Kwanten’s fitness routine.

Ryan Kwanten, an Australian actor, plays Jack Stackhouse in “True Blood”.  Ryan practices yoga.  If at first he was reluctant to it, yoga beat him up.  He’s practicing Vinyasa yoga for several years now.  According to Muscle and Body Magazine, Ryan exercises daily, no matter where he is.  “I do a little something every day. Even when I’m working, I’ll go home and run on the soft sand at two in the morning. No matter the time, even if I have to wake up at four, I do whatever [exercise] I can. If I don’t then I’m not me.”

The actor tried everything: land sports, water sports, box when he was a teen, and now yoga.  Vinyasa yoga is a form of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga and connects movement and breath.  “Vinyasa” means “breath-synchronized movement.”

To give you an example of Vinyasa yoga I’ll mention Cat-Cow Stretch and Sun Salutation sequence.  The first one is about arching the spines on an inhale and rounding on an exhale.  A Sun Salutation sequence includes movements done in the pace of your inspiration and expiration.

Yoga is very effective in:

  • increasing lubrication of the ligaments, tendons, and joints;
  • increasing flexibility;
  • detoxification;
  • massaging the organs of the body;
  • toning of the muscles.

It was proven that yoga may also be effective for digestive disorders, allergies, pain, and other health disorders, like depression and anxiety.  These are just a few benefits of yoga.
