Proposals for a Better World Come from Copenhagen
By Alex Baran, Project Weight Loss Staff Writer December 09, 2009
What it should have been a conference of world’s peace and health, is now transformed into a conflict of interests. What should people do in order to keep Earth alive? At Copenhagen climate summit they negotiated
some green limits; one of them is for carbon emissions. The conflict appeared when developing countries said rich countries are allowed to emit almost as much. In this case, all they have to do set limits depending on countries’ sizes. There’s a risk of severe damage of this planet because of the climate change, so people around the world should burn less than one trillion tons of carbon. They also discussed about a “climate fund” that would help developing countries in this mission. Lumumba Stanislaus Di-Aping (the chief negotiator of a group of 130 developing nations, also called G77) talked about the “moral obligation” of the rich world to cut greenhouse gases. These gases affect Earth’s temperature; they are important because without them, the planet would be 59°F colder than it is now. The problem is human activities have contributed enormously to the increase of this greenhouse gases level. A way to reduce them would be to support electric and hydrogen-fueled vehicles. Corn-based ethanol must be also replaced by bio-fuels. Mr. Di-Aping also referred to the importance of keeping temperature rise below 3.6°F, otherwise parts of Africa will “die” and island states might disappear. We confront with the carbon emissions again. There are simple ways that ordinary people can limit them: conserving energy should be a part of your daily routine; buy compact fluorescent light bulb; replace your fridge with an Energy Star label fridge. You can choose environmentally friendly cleaning products, vegetarian diets, and organic products that will improve both your lifestyle and nature’s health. Reuse everything that allows you to, recycle, and use alternative energy. Since the nature degrades day by day it is important to take care of it and our health as well. ©2009 Project Weight Loss.
